The Boqueria market was opened in 1840 after four years of work on the land occupied until then by the Convent of Sant Josep. Its history goes back much further than that however, as it was in this exact space on the Ramblas that peddlers sold meat in the 13th century.
Over time, the market was transformed into a modern market. Gas lighting was incorporated, and in 1914 the metal roof was completed which, as well as protecting the food, the sellers and the buyers, also gave the market character.
The Boqueria market is a true living, historical and architectural space of unquestionable value. Over the years it has become a must-visit for shoppers and tourists alike, because of the structure of the market itself and the wide variety of products it offers.
