Queralt Sanctuary (Berga)
The Sanctuary of Queralt, also called Santa Maria de Queralt or La Virgen de Queralt, is located northwest of the town of Berga, in the former municipal district of La Valldan.
The Sanctuary is situated on the eastern slope of Castellberguedá, at the top of the Sierra de Queralt, at an altitude of 1,200 metres. Apparently, the site where the Sanctuary stands today was once occupied by the castle of Guillem de Berguedà (1138-1196), the troubadour about whom several texts have been written.
The Queralt complex is comprised of the Sanctuary, where the image of the Virgin of Queralt is worshiped, and an annex building which, in its time, was the guest quarters of the Sanctuary. It now houses the restaurant and the cable car station, accessible from the parking area. Also considered part of the Sanctuary is the church of the Cueva (cave) where, according to legend, a shepherd from Vilaforniu found an image of the Virgin in the 14th century.
