The monument to Christopher Columbus was inaugurated in 1888 for the Universal Exhibition held in Barcelona that year. It was designed by Gaietá Buïgas i Monravá.
The entire sculpture stands 60 metres tall, with the figure of Columbus measuring seven metres. The statue depicts the explorer’s full body, in a standing position. In his left hand he holds a navigational chart and with his right hand he is symbolically indicating the route to America.
A lift inside the iron column takes visitors to the viewpoint at the top, where they can enjoy the unique views of the city.
