Church of Sant Quirze de Pedret (near Berga)

 

The church of Sant Quirze de Pedret is situated in the municipality of Cercs (Berguedà), although it is accessed from Berga, by crossing the Llobregat river over the well-preserved medieval bridge of Pedret.

 

The original church is pre-Romanesque, dating from the 9th century. It features a single nave (the current central nave) with a trapezoidal apse, and an access door on the west (now disappeared). It was extended to three aisles in the mid 10th century, and the two side aisles end in apsidioles with a horseshoe-shaped plan.

 

Of the south aisle, only a small section remains; the rest was replaced in the 13th century by a bell tower, which collapsed (perhaps due to the earthquakes in the 15th century) and by a porch that protects the original Romanesque façade from the 13th century.

 

The inner walls of the central nave had to be reinforced in the 11th century, as, in the transition from "pre" to Romanesque, the wooden gabled roof was replaced with the traditional, and much heavier, stone barrel vault.

 

The interior of the church has very interesting paintings, especially in the apses.
